The Division of Dumaguete City of the Department of Education staged an acting tournament among seven public secondary schools: Dumaguete City High School, Junob National High School, Taclobo National High School, Camanjac National High School, Herminigilda F. Gloria Memorial High School, Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial-Dumaguete Science High School, and Piapi High School.
Each secondary school sent three performers to act a scene adaptation from the William Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. The performers used code switching either by phrase, words, or sentence in English, Cebuano-Visayan, Filipino and Spanish as medium of languages. The play followed the Brechtian way of mounting a play (no spectacle or props needed).
“Performing infront of an audience was not my cup of tea. But with this acting tournament, I’ve learned how to be competitive, confident and value the essence of teamwork. My teammates and I were relieved after delivering a sterling performance,” said Jelly Candia, one of the performers.
The board of judges included Rosalina Banquerigo, Ranulfo Lanojan and Ma. Lina S. Paloma. The winners will be revealed on Oct. 1.
The event was graced by key personnel of DepED Dumaguete led by Dr. Ramir B. Uytico.
The tournament is part of Project MTS: Maximizing Totality of Skills, a joint undertaking of Uytico and City Mayor Manuel T. Sagarbarria. The project aims to increase the academic performance of school children in the City through the integration of culture and the arts in the curriculum. (Claude Sun)
