Dumaguete Mayor Felipe Remollo received awards for the City in Manila last week.
The City received the Sports Destination award, the second time during Remollo’s administration.
Charles Lim, founder of the Sports Tourism Forum, handed the award to the City, together with Tourism Undersec. Benito Bengzon Jr., and Pauland Dumlao, managing director of Plan Bravo-Primetime Group.
Last year, Dumaguete was also bestowed the same distinction for its track record in hosting international, national, and local events that promoted sports tourism and boosted the local economy.
Next year promises to be yet another sports-filled calendar with the City’s hosting of the 2020 ASEAN Schools Games.
After receiving the award in Manila, the Mayor, together with a delegation from the City administration, flew to China to learn the latest technology in security, and be exposed to the “full range of intelligent security solutions” including traffic light system, and command center monitoring.
In China, they hope to explore ways to enhance the capabilities of the closed-circuit television monitoring system in Dumaguete.
Remollo said he wants additional features in the system, like facial recognition, that can detect physical features of visitors as they set foot in Dumaguete through the seaport or the airport.

Another aspect of enhancement of the CCTV system that the Mayor wants upgraded is night vision capabilities, and to explore the possibility of penetrating heavily-tinted vehicles, as well as helmets with dark visors.
Remollo, however, clarified the China visit is not about Generoso’s murder.
Accompanying the Mayor in the visit to China are Councilors Joe Kenneth Arbas, Michael Bandal, Edgar Lentorio Jr., Chaco Sagarbarria, and ABC President Dione Amores; Asst. City Administrator Dinno Depositario, City Legal Officer Manuel Arbon, and public information officer Dems Rey Demecillo.
They are also expected to meet with Chinese government officials to exchange best practices in governance, education, environmental protection, cultural exchange, and sports tourism.
While the travel is authorized, Mayor Remollo clarified that no government funds were used for the trip to China. (With reports from Juancho Gallarde)
