The 2nd Negros Island Region Athletic Association Meet kicked off in Dumaguete Feb. 24, graced by no less than Education Secretary Prof. Leonor Magtolis-Briones, Negros Oriental’s very own.
The athletes and coaches joined a street parade around the City before the opening ceremonies at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex, the main venue of the competitions.
The delegation from the Negros Occidental Division is composed of 479 athletes, 150 coaches and trainers. They are billeted at Valencia National High School and at Bong-ao Elementary School.
Negros Occidental will compete in all 15 sports events in the elementary category, and 21 events in the secondary level.
According to a memorandum from the Department of Education national office, futsal, wrestling, billiards, and wushu are not included in the regular events.
Negros Occidental hosted the 1st NIRAA at the Pana-ad Sports Stadium in Bacolod City last year.
Winners in the NIRAA Meet will represent the Negros Island Region to the 2017 Palarong Pambansa that will be hosted by the Province of Antique in April.
