The Great Physician Rehabilitation Foundation (GPRehab), the City Social Welfare & Development Office, and the Dumaguete City Handicapped Association will celebrate the 33rd National Disability Prevention & Rehabilitation Week with the theme Making the Rights Real for Persons with Disabilities on Monday, July 18 at Quezon Park.

Performances by the Silliman University Kahayag Dance Troupe, Youth Advocacy through Theatre Arts (YATTA), the deaf community, and children with disabilities will be highlighted in a program at Quezon Park at 3:30 pm to kick-off the week-long activity after a mass at Dumaguete Cathedral at 1p.m and a parade around the City at 3p.m.

Aiken Emmanuel Quipot, GPrehab art director, said the event is relevantnot just to raise awareness but also to recognize and distinguish the skills and abilities of persons with disabilities and make them significant affiliates in our society.

The National Disability Prevention Week is a yearly celebration which aims to raise awareness about the rights of persons with disabilities in the Philippines. Some of these rights are the right to education, employment, good health, rights to opportunities that are readily available to all. This year’s theme also has reference to the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which the Philippines signed and ratified two years ago.

The same activities will be held in the Municipality of Valencia on July 20, and in the Municipality of Dauin on July 22. (PR)
