The City Government of Dumaguete has won top prize in the regional level Gawad Pamana ng Lahi (GPL) Awards-City of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Dumaguete City emerged as the champion after a series of validation from the regional GPL team composed of representatives from the different national agencies, said City Information Officer Syril Repe.

The Gawad Pamana ng Lahi Award is among the good governance program of the Aquino government through the DILG, which recognizes the transparency and accountability efforts of various local government units nationwide.

The mechanism involves an assessment of local government unit (LGU) contenders based on the on-line Local Governance Performance Management System, acknowledged innovations, awards received, compliance to anti-red tape act and full disclosure policy among others.

“Dumaguete City bested other cities within the region after a series of consecutive validations. This came handy with the strong commitment to transparent, participative and accountable public service of the officials, department heads and employees headed by Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria,” said Repe.

Last Monday, DILG Chief of Dumaguete City Felix Ablir, Jr. informed the Mayor’s Office about the certification coming from the DILG Central Visayas Regional Director Ananias Villacorta for the said award.

Other winners are Bohol for the province category and Jagna, Bohol for the municipal category.

The regional awardees will receive plaques of recognition, and checks of P3 million, P2 million and P1 million for the provincial, city and the municipality category awardees, respectively. The amount is to be used for the funding of their respective proposed projects.

The awarding was held last Friday, December 14, at the Cebu Grand Hotel, Escario Street, Cebu City, Ablir said. (PIA-Negros Oriental)
