The Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) in partnership with DOST Negros Oriental hosted the training program “Science and Wellness with Seniors” on October 18-19, 2024, in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. This initiative marks the first of its kind in Central Visayas, bringing together forty science and mathematics teachers from the DepEd divisions of Negros Oriental, Dumaguete City, and Siquijor, all of whom are nearing retirement age.

The program aims to equip older adults with scientific knowledge and a deeper appreciation of the changes in their overall well-being. The training also includes an overview of the rights and privileges of senior citizens in the Philippines, essential discussions on disaster awareness and preparedness, and a purposeful retirement workshop. What makes this training even more rewarding is that participants will receive accreditation from the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) for 10 CPD Units. This is an incredible opportunity for our teachers to wrap up their final years of service.

Atty. Gilbert R. Arbon, Provincial Director of DOST Negros Oriental, warmly welcomed the participants to the training. The program featured a diverse lineup of resource persons, including Mr. Kyriacos Louca Jr. from the National Commission of Senior Citizens; Assistant Professors Ma. Jenee Virtudazo and Aiza Kris Bernardo from the University of the Philippines Los Baños – Institute of Human Nutrition and Food; Mr. Raymond Ordinario from DOST-PAGASA; Ms. Sarah Maputi from the Negros Oriental Provincial Health Office; and Mr. Al Marcial Bengco from The Foundry Learning Lab. (DOST Region 7 Negros Oriental)
