The Department of Transportation is eyeing the privatization of the planned airport in Bacong, Negros Oriental, as well as airports in other major tourist destinations in the Philippines.
Transportation Sec. Vivencio Dizon made the announcement Saturday in Iloilo City to update the local officials of the progress of the unsolicited proposal for an Iloilo airport from the Villar Group.
Dizon said under this proposal, the government would invest about P200 million this year. The private proponent will invest about P15 billion as a mandatory investment, but as soon as they come in, the initial investment will be P3.5 billion.
“The instruction of our President is we really need to privatize because that is really the way forward,” Secretary Dizon told reporters in Iloilo.
Other airports eyed for privatization are Davao, Siargao, Kalibo, and Bacolod. (PNA)
