Technical personnel from the Department of Public Works & Highways in Region 7 are helping Dumaguete City come up with a design for two concrete bridges as replacement for the two spillways destroyed by a typhoon late last year.

Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo said Tuesday the technical team from the DPWH-7 regional office has conferred with the city planning office and the city engineering team to make a design that will suit the needs of the city with a specific timetable.

“Technical help was needed because this is the first time that the city is constructing bridges with funds coming from the local coffers,” Remollo said.

These bridges will be constructed at the back of Foundation University and at the Bagacay spillways, he added. The Mayor expressed hope the design would be completed by the end of July so bidding can immediately start before the year ends.

One bridge’s cost ranges from P50 million to P60 million.

Meanwhile, Remollo welcomed the offer of Negros Oriental 2nd District Rep. Manuel Sagarbarria to help look for funds to finance the projects.

The construction of the two bridges is among the priorities of the city to decongest traffic in the city proper aside from the closure and rehabilitation of the existing dumpsite to pave the way for the establishment of a sanitary landfill and a material recovery facility in the proposed site in Candau-ay, the mayor said.
