Dumaguete City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria received P6 million from the National Housing Authority in Manila Monday to be used as partial payment for the 10-hectare property acquired for the shelter of typhoon victims.

The property, owned by the Tale family in Barangay Banilad, Dumaguete, costs P237 million.

Under the counter-parting agreement between the city government, the NHA and the Department of Social Welfare & Development, the Housing Authority will pay for the land and the DSWD will give P70 million.

Sagarbarria said part of the agreement with the land owner is the partial payment of 30 percent before the city can start with the clearing and initial construction phase for the housing project.

Around 300 duplex-type houses worth P110,000 per unit, will be built in the area for the victims of tropical storm “Sendong” in December 2011.

The Mayor said he is happy the project can now take off after almost a year of waiting. He said he has instructed the City Legal Office to prepare the documents so that the initial payment can be made.

Dumaguete is the only local government unit in the country where the NHA purchased a lot for the social housing project. (PNA)
