A late afternoon fire in a crowded section in purok Everlasting, barangay Calindagan Friday rendered 12 families homeless.
Senior Fire Officer 2 Quintino Dumalag Jr., placed the damage at P950,000.
Dumalag said the fire was seen by neighbors as having started from the boarding house of Isaac Teves It-it. However, he said the cause of the fire was still undetermined.
Fire probers were scheduled to go back to the area on Saturday to determine the cause of the fire. He said the area was still too hot last Friday and probers were in danger of getting hit by falling debris.
The fire was reported at 5 p.m. Dumalag said the firemen had difficulty getting to the fire scene as there was no road. “We had to resort to a hose-relay system by joining our fire hoses until it reached the scene,” he said.
The fire was placed under control at 5:30 and was extinguished at 5:45.
Firemen from other towns and cities, as well as from the Dumaguete Filipino Chinese Volunteers Fire Brigade and from Silliman University, came to the aid of the Dumaguete Fire Station.
The homeless fire victims are now temporarily staying at the Dumaguete City High School gymnasium.
