A Dumaguete City student emerged as the regional champion of this year’s PopQuiz held in Cebu City.
Fifteen-year old Marlout Ann S. Sarita from the Dumaguete City National High School bested 18 other students from the different schools divisions in Central Visayas. Sarita, who had been a top scorer in all three quiz rounds, finally clinched the lead with a one-point difference from her contenders, Mary Rose Ampoon from Talisay City Science High School who took 2nd place after a grueling clincher round with 3rd place winner, Justin Carl Bello from Cabancalan National High School, Mandaue City.
PopQuiz is designed to sustain awareness and interest in population issues, and convey population and development concepts and messages to students. This year’s theme, Population, Health, Environment & Local Governance aimed to showcase the students’ knowledge on the issues and concerns on human health and environment that affect the population and how local government units are addressing these interlinked issues.
All 19 schools divisions from the region’s four provinces were represented during this year’s PopQuiz. As regional champion, Sarita will compete in the national level PopQuiz which will be held on April 8 in Tacloban City.
This year’s PopQuiz is a collaborative effort of the Department of Education Regional Office 7 and the Commission on Population Region 7. (PopCom)
