Three students from Dumaguete City landed among the top ten finalists for Central Visayas who will vie for the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) later this year.
Rolando Villamero Jr., regional TOSP representative, identified the three Dumaguete students as Regina Clarina N. Elmaco, a student of St. Paul University Dumaguete (SPUD) taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education-Values Education; Joshua Eleazar P. Domen, a BS Information Technology student also at SPUD and Athena Gene E. Duran, a BS Information Technology student of Silliman University.
The other regional finalists are Wilma Elizabeth A. Rada of St. Theresa’s College; Michael Angelo M. Abarcar of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation; Nesie Fe G. Binatero of the Bohol Wisdom School; Kenneth Regene B. Blasco of the Mater Dei College; Leslie Ann F. Estaniel of the University of Cebu-Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue; Ma. Shiril J. Armero of Southwestern University and Ramon Matthew R. Basabe of the Cebu Doctors University.
“It’s very tough to be an outstanding student because there are millions of students in this country. The qualities that make a student stand out are the ability to balance academics and the commitment, dedication, and willingness to do something. Furthermore, he/she addresses issues that make a difference that matter to the people of this country”, said Ms. Analou L. Suan, chairperson of the board of judges of this year’s regional TOSP search.
The ten regional finalists were formally recognized in a ceremony at the Negros Oriental Convention Center.
Villamero said five schools joined the search this year, namely: Mater Dei College and Bohol Wisdom School from Bohol; and University of Southern Philippines-Foundation, Cebu Doctor’s University, and University of Cebu-Lapu Lapu and Mandaue Campus from Cebu. “This makes TOSP a more mainstream and relevant program in the community setting aside the misconception that this program is only for big universities,” he said.
