A Dumagueteño pediatrician now based in North Carolina, US has completed running all six of the Abbott World Marathon Majors (world’s largest and most prestigious) in a span of five years.

Dr. Arnold Olegario, an alumnus of SU High School batch 1981, and BS Med Tech in 1985, is now one of only 3,700 in the world who have completed running all six full marathons or a distance of 42 kilometers.

Olegario made it to the finish lines of the Tokyo Marathon this year, the Boston Marathon in 2017, the London Marathon also this year, the BMW Berlin Marathon in 2014, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in 2016, and the New York City Marathon in 2015.

In all six marathons, he ran for respectable times of sub-5 hours; or 5 hours-38 mins when he first completed one major in 2014. He has shaved off his finish times since.

He recalls how his running life all began: “I was living an unhealthy lifestyle; I was gaining weight, I had high blood pressure, I had a high cholesterol count, and I was being prescribed medicines.” Not much changed until he started running then joining races.

“At first, I could barely manage to run a mile,” (about 1.6 kilometers) but it did not stop him from pushing himself.

In spite of his being asthmatic, he continued to be encouraged by friends back here in the Philippines who could run marathons.

In 2012, Olegario finished his first full marathon in Toronto, Canada. A second full marathon followed in Miami, Florida.

In between races, he would suffer setbacks during training runs including shin splints, back injuries, and knee injuries. But even that did not stop him.

“I always remind myself that running marathons is 40 percent physical effort, and 60 percent mental. On that note, I always reach the finish line feeling accomplished,” Olegario said. (Girlie Sindiong-Bernardez)
