To commemorate the 56th death anniversary of the 24 Boy Scouts who perished in the 1963 plane crash as they were on their way to participate in the 11th World Scout Jamboree in Greece, the Negros Oriental-Siquijor Council held a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument of Scout Jose Fermin “Jojo” Magbanua, the sole Dumagueteño in the Philippine delegation.

Some 100 scouts and adults scout leaders from public and private schools in Dumaguete trooped to the BSP Magbanua Hall to remember the heroism of Scout Jojo Magbanua, and his fellow Boy Scouts.

First Class Scout Magbanua was from Troop 37 of Silliman University High School, and was the only scout representing the Visayas. Their plane crashed on July 28, 1963 in the Bay of Bombay.

As part of the yearly Scout Memorial Day activity, the Jose & Monserrat Magbanua family awarded the 10 most outstanding senior scouts from the Negros Oriental-Siquijor Council, in recognition of their performance and contributions to scouting, community involvement, and good citizenship.

This year’s Scout Jose Fermin G. Magbanua Awardees are: GG Youkeyme Alpas from Foundation University; Marc Gilbert Aquino and Myles Guian Aquino from Bayawan Science & Technology Education Center; Kent Nino Carmelotes from St. Paul University; Krisroffer Dave Dy from SU Junior High School; Charles Steven Marc Libradilla from Bais City National High School; Cezar Felipe Lopez from Silliman University; Ren Owen Immanuel Nadal from Bais City National High School; Oscar Siray from Negros Oriental High School; and Vhenz Lourd Tabug from Bais City National High School.

In the same event, also awarded were National Court of Honor Scout Sergio Tamayo Jr., and Scout Aldrin Yaeso.

Present during the program were BSP Council President Judge Antonio Alcantara, GSP Council President Dr. Profetiza Sun-Lim, Council Scout Executive Queen Marie Ferraren, and Dr. Juanito Magbanua, brother of Scout Jojo Magbanua. (Penn Larena)
