Pupils from Grades 4-6 in the 18 public elementary schools in Dumaguete City no longer have to make do with a few desktop computers in their e-classrooms. Now each pupil can get hold of a tablet computer and access new learning software, thanks to the Targeting Little Cyberlearners joint project of the Department of Science & Technology, the Department of Education, the Rotary Clubs-Dumaguete East, the Dumaguete government, Algorithm Computer Services, and other partners.
Each e-classroom has been equipped with a computer server, a WiFi router, and 30-50 tablet computers with headsets.
The Rotary Clubs gave a grant for the purchase of the ICT equipment. The City Government matched the grant with funding for additional tablets. DepEd Dumaguete City Division provided the e-classrooms and additional furniture and electrical connections. DOST Region VII provided grant-in-aid for some servers, as well as general project management and networking. Algorithm and Foundation University’s Night Owl Tech Incubator provided the needed technical consultancy and software installation services. DOST’s Science & Technology Information Institute supplied valuable educational content, the STARBOOKS digital library with mobile application.
The launching of the new ICT-based learning system in the public schools was celebrated on June 17 in a simple program at the Dumaguete Council Session Hall, with STII Director Richard Burgos as keynote speaker. (Gilbert Arbon/DOST)
