BANGKOK, THAILAND — On behalf of BPW International  (International Federation of Business and Professional Women), and as representative of the science and professional communities, I thank the UN Economic & Social Commission for Asia & the Pacific (UNESCAP) for the opportunity to contribute to the important discussion on enhancing regional cooperation and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific.

At the intersection of science and gender equality, BPW International champions the role of women as critical agents of change in fostering innovation and inclusive growth. Women scientists, policymakers, and entrepreneurs bring unique perspectives that are crucial for solving complex challenges — from addressing climate change to advancing digital transformation.

However, significant barriers remain. Women are still underrepresented in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math; decision-making processes, and leadership roles across the region. Bridging this gap is not only a matter of justice but a strategic imperative for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

BPW International calls for three targeted actions:

1) Integrating gender in regional science policies. We urge member states to adopt gender-responsive strategies in their scientific frameworks, ensuring equitable access to funding, education, and mentorship for women;

2) Harnessing science for inclusive development. Science and technology must drive inclusive solutions, particularly for vulnerable groups, addressing disparities in access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities.

3) Regional collaboration in gender and science initiatives. Partnerships among governments, academia, and organizations like BPW International are essential to foster cross-border research and capacity building, amplifying the voices of women in science.

Let us collectively ensure that no one is left behind in our journey toward progress. By empowering women in science and all professional fields, we strengthen not only the fabric of our societies but also our ability to innovate and thrive in the face of global challenges.
