We were about to close the pages for the week when news came of the MetroPost’s winning another national award — Best in Photojournalism — during the Community Press Awards in Manila, where we were holding the 23rd National Press Forum.

This award, the same award we bagged last year, came as another pleasant surprise for all of us in MetroPost. This is, after all our third national award from no less than the Philippine Press Institute, the country’s association of newspapers.

To get to the finals, the MetroPost had to pass through a rigorous regional elimination round, where judges from the country’s top journalism schools examined all our issues for 2018. After we got through the regional eliminations, besting all community weekly newspapers in the Visayas, we had to compete with the finalists from Luzon and Mindanao.

The citation for Best in Photojournalism reads: “MetroPost is packed with images of various themes — news, sports, human interest, etc. Fearless photographers produce amazingly incredible photos. Images full of information which don’t even need captions, images which put the readers right on the place where the event happened.”

Why is this award so special? The Best in Photojournalism award validates the skills of our reading community who unselfishly share their stories through photos for the benefit of all our readers.

Newspapers are said to mirror communities. A newspaper is, in a sense, a community talking to itself. It represents the soul of the community, aside from being an active chronicler of the community’s history, for future historians to refer to.

We love to think that we all had something to do with winning this national award. This paper, after all, is your community paper. This national award does not go to just one person — it is an award for everyone who is a part of our growing reading community.

We will continue to partner with you, our dear readers, to give you a newspaper that strives to empower you through news and information.

Congratulations, then, to all of us!
