Discipline is something that people need to succeed in any undertaking. Together with the patience and industry, discipline can achieve great things.

Great men have achieved tremendous successes because of self-discipline, coupled with other virtues such as patience and diligence. With patience and faith in what they are doing, great men have succeeded where others have failed.

Today however, there seems to be a lack of discipline especially among the young generation.

Lack of discipline is a perennial problem by school authorities in many students, with the inception of human rights and some laws restraining school authorities in enforcing draconian measures to impose discipline.

Students believe that they can do whatever they believe can give them fun and enjoyment. Unfortunately, this false sense of freedom has led into bullying.

How then can schools enforce discipline? Fortunately, there are some measures where discipline can be enforced.

Tanjay National High School has a unique way of imposing discipline and dispensing punishment for students who have committed infraction.

For first offenders, a warning is given for minor offense, and the parents are called for a conference. For second offense, there is a corresponding number of days suspension from classes. For those who commit major offense, automatic suspension is given with the presence of the parents and the grievance committee.

What makes it unique for TNHS is that the suspended students are required to report to school but they cannot attend classes. Instead, they are given tasks to perform such as cleaning the school grounds, washing dishes in the canteen, and other assignments given by the guidance officer. Their performance is monitored. After the completion of the required number of days of suspension, they are allowed to return to their classes on probationary status with a progress report of their behavior being checked by each subject teacher. When this is satisfied, their probationary status is lifted.

The parents, of course, in the presence of the grievance committee sign a statement of conformity to the method of enforcing discipline.
