Sixty families who were victims of the flashfloods that hit Dumaguete City more than three years ago will soon have their own homes after the groundbreaking ceremonies yesterday near the Habitat housing site in Bajumpandan under the Core Shelter Housing program.
A joint project of the city government and the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the program will benefit flashflood victims, most of them living along the banks of the Banica River from Candau-ay down to barangay Calindagan and Tinago.
DSWD assistant regional director, Nemia Antipala, was assisted by Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria at groundbreaking. DSWD is giving P4.2 million for the 60 units and the city’s counterpart is the one-hectare lot.
City social welfare officer Marina Mendoza said each unit that costs about P70,000 will be completed by the recipient.
She said the design can withstand winds of a 185-kilometer per hour.
Tenement houses will also be constructed near the area for the rest of the homeless families in Dumaguete, Sagarbarria said. (PNA/Juancho Gallarde)
