The Province of Negros Oriental has enough food supply until the end of the Enhanced Community Quarantine.

Provincial Agriculturist Nestor Villaflores disclosed this in a media interview at the sides of the launching of “Kadiwa on Wheels” Mobile Market held this morning in front of the Provincial Capitol.

The ECQ is expected to end on April 30).

However, Villaflores noted that the Provincial Agriculturist Office is also looking for ways to boost the production of the province’s prime agricultural commodities in anticipation of a prolonged period of ECQ.

“Makalahutay ta pero duna koy programa sa PAO na i-enhance pa nato ni kay wala pa ni nato mahibal-an kung pila pa ni kabulan. Three to four months okay pa pero after four months unsa na lang atong mahimo? Duna tay programa gilunsad pod unya, himoon diin maboost nato ang atong prime commodity rice and corn.

(We have enough supply for now. However, PAO is looking for ways to further enhance the production because we cannot predict for how many months this will really last. Our supply can last for three to four months but what happens on the fourth month and afterwards? We have programs which we will launch in the near future which can help boost the production of rice and corn which is our prime commodities),” Villaflores said.

For now, PAO is focused on addressing the people’s limited access to public markets to buy food because of the imposition of market passes due to the ongoing ECQ.

Only those who have passes are allowed to enter the market and buy farm produce.

To this, PAO, together with the Department of Agriculture and the Bureau of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources launched the ‘’Kadiwa on Wheels” Mobile Market so that more people can buy agricultural products at a cheaper price without having to go to the market.

“Atong gi-launch (ni) karon tungod sa atong nakita pahinganlan sa atong molupyo. Wala tay kulang sa pagkaon pero ang kulang sa panahon kay ga-color scheming man ta sa Dumaguete so naay uban natong kaigsoonan nga dili makanha sa merkado

(We have launched this today to address the needs of the residents of the province. We don’t have a shortage in supply of food but our time to buy food is limited. In Dumaguete City, a color-coding scheme is already imposed so there are people who can’t go to the market),” Villaflores explained.

“Usa (pod) ni sa pamaagi na maimplementar ang atong social distancing kay lantawon nato ang atong merkado magpuno og sa ingon ani na pamaagi makuha-kuhaan sila didto.

(This is also a way to implement the social distancing. If we look at it, our market gets jampacked. Through this initiative, we can decrease the volume of people going to the market),” he added.

The Province’s Agriculture Chief said this program would also assure the public that there is no shortage of food supply in the province in view of the CoViD-19 pandemic.

PAO has tapped different farmer associations and cooperatives to sell their farm produce.

Farm products sold at the “Kadiwa on Wheels” Mobile Market include various fruits, vegetables, fresh eggs, dried fish, and fresh fish and poultry.

The “Kadiwa on Wheels” will be roaming different barangays in the city today.

It is scheduled to visit Barangays Bantayan, Lo-oc, Poblacion 8, Motong, Cadawinonan, in Camella Village, Balugo, Talay, Junob, Bagacay, and Calindagan.

The mobile market will also go to Guihulngan City tomorrow.

Villaflores said other towns and cities in the province are encouraged to set up their own mobile markets.

The “Kadiwa on Wheels” will continue throughout the duration of the ECQ.

Villaflores invited the public to watch out for the mobile market in their village.

He also reminded them to observe social distancing and always wear mask when going out to buy food.

The “Kadiwa on Wheels” is a joint undertaking of PAO, DA, and BFAR in Negros Oriental.

It provides an opportunity for farmers and fisherfolks to directly sell their products to the consumers at a cheaper price and create livelihood for agricultural workers who are affected by the CoViD-19 pandemic.

Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo underscored this initiative is also a response to the public’s clamor for food security in this crisis.

“Niining panuhan na nag-declare ta as state of calamity ug nag-declare ta ug ECQ kaning maong programa mayo ginakinahanglan karon

(This program is what we need in this time where we have declared a state of calamity and we have placed the province under ECQ),” Degamo said. (ral/PIA7-NegOr)
