The former provincial police director of Negros Oriental and who was also once the police chief of Dumaguete City has been promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent of the Philippine National Police or equivalent to a one-star general in the military.

Chief Supt. Rey Lyndon Toledo Lawas, 54, who hails from Compostela, Cebu but who has resided in Dumaguete for decades with his family, was among the seven PNP officers who received their “stars” during the Oath-Taking and Donning of Ranks Ceremonies on Jan. 15 at Camp Crame, Quezon City.

Chief PNP Police Director Gen. Ronald Dela Rosa was the presiding officer of the ceremony, and led in the oath-taking and donning of ranks.

Lawas, a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy’s Hinirang Class of 1987, is married to Dumagueteña Alberta Janine Flores, now chief of the Land Transportation Office in Bayawan City. They have two children: Kristoffer Erik Lyndon and Giullia Rae.

Chief Supt. Lawas was raised single-handedly by his mother, Linda Toledo Lawas of Compostela, Cebu.

Some of his assignments included being the head of the PNP’s Regional Public Safety Battalion 7, regional chief of the Firearms, Explosives, Security Agencies & Guard Supervisory Section, and key positions at the PRO-7.

He was also awarded as one of MetroBank’s Outstanding Policemen of the Year.

Other PNP officers who were promoted are Police Director Noli Galsim Taliño, sole recipient of two stars; and Chief Superintendents Edwin de Ocampo, Carlito Feliciano, John Bulalacao, R’Win SA Pagkalaniwan, and Rolando Anduyan.

Police Director Taliño was once assigned in Negros Oriental as a lieutenant in the Special Action Forces at the height of the insurgency in the late 80s, while Chief Supt. Lawas was also assigned in Negros Oriental within the same period with the Regional SAF.

Taliño and Lawas worked together as regional director and deputy regional director, respectively, of the PNP Regional Office 7 in Cebu City.

At the time of their promotions, Taliño and Lawas were also assigned as director and executive officer, respectively, of the PNP Human Resource & Doctrine Development office in Camp Crame in Quezon City.
