In recognition of her commitment in nation-building, government transparency, public policy, and in the academe, Education Sec. Prof. Leonor Magtolis-Briones was conferred with an honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, by Foundation University.

The conferral by FU President Victor Vicente “Dean” Sinco and Foundation Preparatory Academy Administrator Dr. Mira Sinco coincided with the University’s Honors Day convocation held at the Sofia Soller Sinco Hall, where Secretary Briones also served as guest speaker.

In her speech, Briones emphasized the importance of maintaining and carrying the honor one receives. She cited the life of Stephen Hawking — a brilliant mind whose special needs transcended his difficult circumstances. Briones encouraged the students not to let poverty and physical barriers hinder them from achieving their goals.

Briones, who was chairperson of the Silliman University Board of Trustees before she was appointed a Cabinet position by President Duterte, also served as National Treasurer during former President Estrada’s administration. (SU OIP)
