“It was one of the best days,” recalled Foundation University High School football coach Reginald Jukes, after FU “A” Team and Under 16 won over Silliman teams during Governor’s Cup championship game last Sunday.
The FU A Team won the open category in a way Coach Reggie described as “putting the icing on the cake” when the game was decided by a free kick. The free kick, which brought the team to victory, has now gained the moniker “unigames” after assistant coach Samerhey “Mering” Tumongha shouted the word as the Silliman’s team formed their wall and the kick was scored.
“The kick got its nickname because it was last executed during the Unigames,” Jukes said. “I think we should make a nickname for every free kick from now on. It makes our free kicks unique, and there is no way for the opponent to know what it is,” he added.
On the other hand, FU Under 16 won in the finals on a penalty shoot out against Silliman’s Eis on Fries with a penalty score of 3-1.
“Our teams did what they were told. They are improving and making headway in it. Learning from previous experiences, I have tried to eradicate the players’ bad habits,” Jukes said.
He added that during training, he would highlight each of the player’s performances and encourage them to do better in the next practices.
Mr. Jukes also explained how he, as a coach, plans all the areas and moves for their games. With the help of his assistant “Mering,” they would show themselves the proper kicks and let the players execute it.
He also said the one of the best values in their winning is paying attention to details.
“We taught our teams to be aware of what’s going on in the games, look for the opposition and what damage they can do to the opposition,” he said. The Governor’s Cup is managed by the Negros Athoetic Association and sponsored by Smart Communications. (Angela Bacang)
