The Foundation University Department of Architecture and Fine Arts spearheaded last week’s Sand Sculpture competition at the Aroma Beach Resort in Campuyo, Manjuyod. Now on its fourth year, Vice President for Finance and Administration Victor Vicente Sinco said this is not an original idea. “This came from the University of Hawaii, which has been doing this for 30 years already.”
Sand castles, the common design for people playing with sand, are discouraged in this competition, which is open to any group or institution.
The point of this exercise, Sinco said, is to train students to think of solutions quickly.
“This is not math, this is architecture,” Sinco said. “In the future, when you’re sitting down with a big client and you need to come up with a solution in 10 minutes, your ability to solve the problem in 10 minutes is how you’ll get that big commission!” (Paul Edward Bajas)
