The international organization Greenpeace engaged with students of Foundation University on the need to help save our sharks and our oceans, during the University convocation for the second semester held Nov. 11 at the Sofia Soller Sinco Hall.
Oscar Gador, Public Engagement campaigner of Greenpeace, talked about the importance of sharks in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.
He also urged the students to sign the petition that is calling on the government to declare the country’s waters as “shark sanctuary”.
The waters surrounding the seven-kilometer long Malapascua Island, off the coast of Daanbantayan in the northernmost tip of Cebu, is among a few in the country that has been declared as shark sanctuary.
As such, the killing and selling of sharks is prohibited in the market.
Gador suggested to the students that one way they can help in saving the sharks and the oceans is to reduce the use of plastics because it is non-biodegradable, and almost always ends up in the sea.
He also encouraged the students to discover for themselves the beauty of the seas for them to realize and understand why it’s important to preserve and protect these natural resources.
Foundation University’s commitment to environmental protection and conservation is at the center of every undertaking that it pursues, whether in instruction, research, or extension efforts. The University holds the distinction of being the Most Sustainable and Eco-Friendly School in the Country, according to the Department of Environment & Natural Resources.
