Visitors at Robinson’s Mall Dumaguete food court witnessed another art exhibit from Dumaguete’s budding artists from Foundation University.
Dubbed as Project Uno, the five-day exhibit that ended Oct. 16, was a culmination of the first semester work of the students of the FU Fine Arts Students Association.
FUFASA President Alma Zosan Alcoran, a 3rd year student, said the event gave them a chance to do hands-on curating and prepared them to make exhibits, from selecting the art works to be displayed, arrangement and proper lighting.
The artworks that were displayed were made of locally-available materials. One artwork that caught the attention of many people was a big nest made of straw and twigs. In the nest were pieces of eggshells, with a drawn shape of Negros island, and a mask.
“The eggshell and mask represent people from Dumaguete who have gone to other places but keep coming back to their hometown.” Alcoran said. They also represented visitors who keep coming back to continue to experience the allures of Dumaguete.
Art instructor Antonio Mario Wenceslao gave credit to the fine arts students for the successful exhibit.
“Based on the gallery and the way it was presented, the students surely know how to maximize their resources given the available resources on hand,” he said.
Wenceslao said he was also pleasantly surprised to see sketches by first year students on display and looks forward to seeing the students produce more art in the coming years.
On their first and second year, fine arts students take up painting. On their third and fourth year, they take up pottery, multimedia, etc. “Their curriculum is just not centered on artwork alone but also on other modes of presenting their artistry,” Wenceslao said.
Next semester, the fine arts students will mount another exhibit–Project Dos. This will include pottery and other interesting artwork, which they hope will be held in a bigger gallery to accommodate more artwork from students. (Joel Llanos)
