Football players from the FU Grade School beat football clubs in Cebu to win the championship in the recently-concluded 9th Thirsty Cup in Cebu City.
The booters won all six games starting from the three elimination rounds, quarter finals, semi-finals and the championship game at the University of San Carlos football field in barangay Talamban, Cebu City last February 11 and 12.
Vladimir Villacora, coach of the FU football team, said his players out-maneuvered even much taller players from Cebu schools. “One of our players, Christian Penalosa, is only chest-high compared to the Cebuano booters, but Penalosa can beat three to four taller players because of his agility and his ability to psyche out his opponents.”
The teams which played against FU were from Canduman A, Barili, Lawaan, Balamban, San Roque and Bright Academy Red.
On the other hand, the FU Under-10 football players survived the three elimination rounds but eventually lost to Don Bosco A by one goal in the penalty shootout.
The FU Girls Under 17 football team also started out well by winning their first two games, only to succumb to San Roque FC and the Ateneo de Cebu.
Coach Geraldine Cabrera said that their participation in the Thirsty Cup was a learning experience for everyone.
