A graduate of the BS Architecture program of Foundation University is one of thirty students across the Philippines who are vying for a slot in this year’s Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines.
Von Jovi Biala, who took part in the first design-build program of the Department of Architecture and Fine Arts’ Estudio Damgo, has impressed the judges with his advocacy for community-based, relevant and sustainable architecture.”
Estudio Damgo built a day care center for the pre-school children of sitio Dungga, barangay Malaunay in the town of Valencia, utilizing volunteers. Funding for the project was sourced from individual donors worldwide through Global Giving, an international fund-raising partner.
Along with Von are 5 other National Finalists from Region VII while the TOSP winners will be announced on August 29, during the National Week Program at the Heroes Hall of Malacanang Palace in Manila.
“I really feel anxious,” Von said, “I don’t know what will happen as everything is a surprise until the 29th.”
He, however, assured that in the event that he does not make it to the top 10, he would continue his responsibility and advocacy for community-based, relevant and sustainable architecture.
The TOSP program is aimed at honoring graduating college students who have personified exemplary leadership, academic excellence and a deep sense of social responsibility, anchored on strong moral values of patriotism, integrity, and selfless service.
Attending the National Week Program are 30 finalists from some 25 universities of representing nine regions in the country. Among them are student council presidents, young journalists, future teachers, future doctors, future social entrepreneurs, engineers, accountants, and many more. (Paul Edward Bajas)
