Former Finance Secretary Gary Teves says tournaments are created to give the youths and the young at hearts the avenue for sportsmanship, camaraderie, and character formation.
Teves was the guest speaker during the opening of the Gary Teves Cup in Amlan, which attracted amateur basketball and volleyball teams from eight of barangays , namely, Bio-os, Jantianon, Jugno, Mag-abo, Poblacion, Silab, Tambujangin, and Tandayag, at the Amlan Quadrangle, a day before Nutrition Month kicked off in the said town.
Teves, an avid basketball fan, also emphasized the role of sports in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Other top officials of the province like Cong. George Arnaiz of the 2nd District, Cong. Henry Teves of the 3rd District, Vice Governor Jun Arnaiz also graced the opeing of the tournament.
Mayor Bentham dela Cruz together with other town officials, and the chairmen of the participating barangays led the guests and the teams that were gathered in the Amlan Quadrangle for the inaugural jump ball.
A short pageant was also held to select the best team muse. Rachelle Silay of Brgy. Mag-abo took home the top prize of P4,000, sponsored by former Cong. Herminio Teves. The other beauties each received P1,000 as consolation prize.
