Four unidentified male suspects who claimed to be members of the Communist New People’s Army (NPA) shot dead a “habal-habal” or motorcycle-for-hire driver in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental.

A police report Thursday afternoon identified the victim Regie Fundador, of legal age, married, and a resident of Sitio Kataklongan in the mountain village of Linantuyan in Guihulngan, a city about 116 kilometers north of this capital.

Initial police investigation disclosed that at around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Fundador was driving his motorcycle at Barrio Luz when he was waylaid by the four suspects and was shot for no apparent reason, said PO1 Marlon Delantes of the Guihulngan Police Station.

According to Delantes, no witnesses have volunteered to come out in the open, thus slowing down police investigation.

Delantes disclosed early Friday evening that they had just arrived from the mountain village of Linantuyan with the demised “habal-habal” driver whose body will be brought to the hospital for medico legal examination.

It was not immediately known how many gunshot wounds the victim had succumbed to, Delantes said, as they still have to wait for the post-mortem examination.

Also, the type of firearm used and the motive for the killing was also not determined as yet, he added.

But the policeman disclosed that based on the information they had gathered in Linantuyan, they learned that the victim had a brother who was a victim of hold-up and who had filed a case against the two suspects.

One of the suspects is now incarcerated while the other one is still at-large, PO1 Delantes said, but investigators could not yet ascertain if this was connected to Fundador’s murder.

The family of the victim also could not say whether Fundador had personal enemies.

Meanwhile, the four suspects who fled the scene immediately after shooting to death the victim had shouted in the Cebuano dialect that they were NPA members, Delantes said.

The suspects also said they will be coming back, apparently to go after another target, he added. (Judy Flores Partlow/PNA)
