The City government and the Philippine Handball Federation Inc. are currently scouting for local athletes to join the Philippine men and women teams to represent the country during the Southeast Asian Beach Handball Championships to be held on Nov. 2-6 for the first time in the country, here in Dumaguete.
PHF Program Director Joanna Franquelli and national coach Jamael Pangandaman are in town to conduct clinics and tryouts to seek potential athletes for possible inclusion in the Philippine team.
Promising athletes from Silliman University, Negros Oriental State University, Foundation University and other schools converged at the FU North Campus gym for instructions and tryouts.
The results of the try-outs will be known this month to enable the athletes to go for further training in anticipation of fierce competition against powerhouse teams from Thailand and Vietnam.
PHF Acting President Jose Capistrano Jr. chose Dumaguete City to host the South East Asian Handball Championships in recognition of its strategic location, excellent record of hosting sports events, quality facilities, and supportive local government.
Mayor Remollo has accepted the hosting of this event to further promote the sports tourism program of the City.
Handball is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outfield players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into their goal being guarded by the competing team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins. (Dgte PIO)
