Former governor and congressman Herminio G. Teves, a pillar in Negros Oriental’s political and economic scene, died Wednesday.
Teves, 99, had served Negros Oriental as congressman in the 1970s, and then as OIC Governor of Negros Oriental from 1986 to 1988. He later ran and won as congressman of the Third District, which he served for three consecutive terms.
Teves is remembered as one of the most senior members of the House with perfect attendance, and who introduced out-of-the-box solutions to the country’s problems on tax collection, among others.
News of Teves’ death was shared on social media by many persons whose lives he had touched. Former President and House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo flew in last week to condole with the family.
Sen. Cynthia Villar and her husband, former Sen. Manny Villar, also condoled with the family by sending flowers.
Today May 19, Teves’ wake will be at his residence in barangay Taclobo in Dumaguete City, where a mass will be held at 8 p.m. to be followed by a tribute showing.
On Monday, May 20, there will be a funeral mass at the Perpetual Help Church at 8.a.m., followed by the interment at the Dumaguete Memorial Park. (MP)
