Foundation University’s iPad program got a big boost this month after a junior high school student made his first iPad app.

Carl Matheous Simpao, 14, uploaded his app named “Pad Paper” last July 15. This free application was two weeks.

“It’s a simple note-taking app,” the proud Carl said of his creation.

This app resulted from Simpao’s interest in the iPad, which Foundation University introduced as a learning tool for sophomore students last year.

Aside from the iPad requirement, FUHS students learn basic html, which can enable them to make webpages.

Starting this year, the iPad became a requirement for students from 4th grade until 4th year high school.

Carl said he made the Pad Paper app to see if he could make one similar to what he had in his iPad. It took him all of two months to make, months to make, self-study and from getting some pointers online. “The most difficult part in making this app was integrating all the data and storing the information on my iPad,” he said. Data integration is a topic that students normally go through in their 3rd year in college.

Carl, or Mat to some friends, started to take an interest in computers at the age of 12, when he started to learn computer programming.

He soon mastered making webpages, and was looking for more challenges. That’s when he was led to making IOS apps or apps for mobile devices.

While living with a physical handicap of an undeveloped left arm, Carl more than makes up for it by going for it by going into sports as a defender in the FUHS football team.

Victor Vicente Sinco, FU vice president for finance & administration, who is also Carl’s football coach, said Carl is a “wonder boy”. “Nothing seems to stop him. He is right up there with our internal philosophies regarding academics, sports, and the ability to project one’s future.”

Meanwhile, another app came out of Foundation University last July 15.

Michael Denson Tulang, 24, a web and IOS developer at Entheos IT, made an e-book titled Dodong. Written by Pish Dadivas, Dodong is a story about a kid who desperately wants to go to school and overcomes challenges, such as a flood, to get there.

Michael said his e-book, which is in Filipino, has been downloaded 243 times from the iStore as of July 26, barely 11 days after its release.

This, too, is Michael’s first app, although he mastered webpage-making as a BS Information Technology student at Foundation University. He graduated last March. (Alex Rey Pal)
