Rising temperature triggered honeybees locally known as putyukan to seek refuge in cooler areas where they can find their food source.
A farmer in Magatas, Sibulan in Negros Oriental was surprised to see a swarm of honeybees in an Ayanguile tree located near his house while he was watering the plants at around 6 in the evening.
He said it is unusual for honeybees to build their beehives near a residential area since they are usually found in the forest.
Apolinario Cariño said the presence of honeybees is an indication that their habitat was disturbed.
The rising temperature could also be a possible reason for their migration.
The extreme heat has caused the wilting of plants which caused the unavailability of their food source.
Cariño explained that despite the strong campaign to preserve the habitat of these creatures there are still irresponsible individuals who cannot respect the law.
He said honey from wild bees is sold at higher cost in the market. This is the reason why hunters are enticed to harvest bee hives even if it will cause extinction to these wild honeybees.
He added the migration of these wild honeybees due to the availability of flowers from fruit trees and orchard that are free from chemicals.
The wild honeybees are now slowly building their beehive at the top branch of Ayanguile tree. (PNA)
