Most of my weekends are spent hiking or running the trails of various mountains.

But trekking these mountain trails is not simply to enjoy nature but I make sure I do it with a purpose: to help or spearhead clean-ups, to plant trees, to assist in the conduct of medical missions, to engage in various outreach programs.

That has been my advocacy since I started climbing mountains: to help people in the rural areas while helping save Mother Nature.

Seeing the smiles of the people from the little things we do for them inspires us even more to continue doing what we love doing, and even encourages others to help along.

What I do as a trail runner has something to do not only with endurance and physical strength, but more so with passion for nature and the outdoors, the regimen and the discipline to strive to remain fit at all times.

Finishing as champion in the recent Puncak Tanawan Mountain Run surprised even myself because I knew deep in my heart I was simply (almost casually)doing what I loved best: running the mountain trails.

To be honest, I did not engage in a four-month training program (or something like that) nor do all those required hill repeats.

I just went about my usual self, running up and down the mountains like I always do, hitting the roads at night after work, relieving myself of stress from the day’s work, and enjoying myself or the company of fellow endurance runners.

For the Puncak run, I registered for the 50-kilometer category.

Strictly speaking, I should have practiced trail running of 30 kilometers for at least four times; running 21 kilometers (or a half marathon) or longer for at least two times; doing a 10-kilometer at least once; and regularly running eight kilometers and five kilometers for at least two months. But you know how it is, we have work to do, obligations to comply. So I just ran what I could at the end of an exhausting day.

I taught myself to eat more law-oy (combination of various vegetables in soup), maintain the habit of drinking three liters of water or more daily, eat more fruits, and avoid (or at least minimize) eating fatty foods or drinking soda.

And I believe those are the simple steps that keep me fit and which take me to the finish line.

For the Puncak Trail Run, I am grateful to Race Director Rhodel Sarande for organizing the mountain race in the municipality of Sibulan.
