A recent graduate of the School of Basic Education (High School Department) represented Silliman University in the 2nd Steinway Youth Piano Competition held in late April in Manila.
Alexis Faye Pal is the first from Silliman to have qualified for the competition open to ages 11 to 17 years old. Her repertoire was composed of three pieces: Sonata No. 5 in G Major K283 Allegro by W.A. Mozart, Aufschwung by Schumann, and Partita V. Praeambulum by J.S. Bach.
Pal has been taking up piano lessons since she was nine years old at the College of Performing & Visual Arts under the tutelage of Dean Dr. Elizabeth Susan Vista-Suarez.
During her high school graduation in March, Alexis Pal was awarded the Talent Award by the SU High School administration.
For the Steinway competition, Pal’s piano skills was also beefed up with piano lessons from Bobbie Dimaya-Vista.
The competition was part of the biennial international festival organized by Steinway & Sons in Hamburg, Germany, to identify, encourage, and promote young pianists in the formative stages of their careers. Various countries concurrently ran national-level auditions to determine their representatives for the International Steinway Festival in Hamburg.
Steinway Gallery Singapore organizes the regional finals for Asia Pacific with winners from nine countries. Representing the Philippines in the regional finals in Singapore is another young pianist from Manila. (SU OIP)
