Negrenses can look forward to a unique display of global street dancing this month as the Negros Oriental State University prepares to roll out its Hugyawan Festival on Dec. 3. This year’s Hugyawan will feature the various carnivals of the world.

“This is to show a spectacular parade of colorful costumes, festivities, humorous gimmicks and merrymaking in the streets of Dumaguete,” said NORSU information officer Joy Perez.

Hugyawan, Cebuano word taken from hugyaw or revelry, is the annual festival held to culminate NORSU’s Founder’s Day celebration.

The festival this year will mark the 84th Founder’s Day of the only state university in Negros Oriental, the activities of which will start from Nov. 28.

Dr. Peter Dayot, overall chair for this year’s Hugyawan celebration, said that each competing contingent from the University’s colleges and departments will present a certain carnival being celebrated by a particular country.

Perez said a total of 14 contingents are set to dance on the streets during the Hugyawan: Sakela (Nepal) by the College of Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy & Allied Health Sciences; Carnivaldel Pueblo (London) by the College of Business & Accountancy; Sinulog de Cebu (Philippines) by the Siaton Campus; Masskara (Philippines) by the College of Maritime Education; Grand Cañao—Adivay (Philippines) by the College of Industrial Technology; GOA Carnival (India) by the Mabinay Campus; El Callao Carnival (Venezuela) by the College of Agriculture & Forestry; Carnival of Venice (Italy) by the College of Education; Carnival de Baranquilla (Colombia)by the College of Engineering & Architecture; Cardinal de Nice (France) by the Guihulngan Campus; Carnival de Oruro (Bolivia) by the Bayawan- Sta.
