DAUIN, NEGROS ORIENTAL — An environmental campaign to help save marine resources was launched in the Province by the 79th Infantry Batallion, in partnership with the 3rd Infantry (Spearhead) Division, the local government of Dauin, and the Department of Environment & Natural Resources.

Dubbed Apo I CARe (Apo Island Coral Assessment & Rehabilitation), the activity is timed with the unit’s ninth anniversary on Aug. 19. It also aimed to promote tourism in the area.

The unit had coordinated with the Protected Area Management Board in Dumaguete, the agency in charge of orchestrating scientific researches and studies of marine resources of Apo Island.

In support, the unit conducted hiking, snorkeling, and diving activities within the island, aimed to heighten the awareness, and promote the appreciation of the participants on the conservation support effort.

The Philippine Army is mandated to implement, promote, and support environmental conservation efforts such as anti-illegal logging, tree planting activities, coastal clean-up drives, aside from its main functions of internal peace and security operations. (Masaligan PR)
