Over 3,000 qualified senior citizens from 30 barangays have received their quarterly pensions of P3,000 covering the months from October to December 2004.

A statement from City Hall said that the quarterly pensions were distributed Thursday and Friday at the City Evacuation Center in barangay Talay.

Dumaguete Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo instructed the Office of Senior Citizens Affairs, and the City Social Welfare & Development Office to schedule two days for the 30 barangays to ensure a safe and orderly distribution of the social pensions for the elderly.

Qualified beneficiaries who failed to claim their social pensions can receive their benefits from the City Treasurer’s Office next week, the statement said.

There are 3,067 beneficiaries of the social pension in Dumaguete City as identified by the DSWD Regional Office 7.

City Social Welfare & Development Officer Lilibeth Filipinas said senior citizens eligible to receive the social pension are: at least 60 years old, identified as indigent residents of the barangay (especially those who are bedridden), have maintenance medicines, not receiving any pension or survivorship pensions, and not receiving financial support from their children (especially from abroad).

The number of beneficiaries may gradually increase if Dumaguete City will be granted additional slots or allocation from the national government through DSWD based on the approved budget, the statement continued. (PR)
