Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo has asked the Philippine National Police, Philippine Army and the National Bureau of Investigation to investigate and identify the culprits behind the death threats he has received.

During the recent Peace and Order Council meeting, Degamo expressed concern over the increasing number of death threats he had received through text messages and handwritten letters. Since he assumed office, at least 60 death threats have been received by Degamo.

“I don’t want to be a sitting duck,” he said, as he expressed his concern before the PPOC members. He said that the threats against his life are no longer a joke. He said while he is not afraid of the threats, his concern is more on the safety of his family as they are more affected by the situation.

Degamo said he believes that the threats could come from people in the province who are not happy that he holds the governorship. The threats could also because of his strong campaign against illegal gambling, illegal quarry operations and the unsolved killings in the province.

He challenged the PNP, NBI, CIDG and other local law enforcement agencies to verify the presence of guns-for-hire in the province.

Degamo added that the threat has challenged him to perform more and fulfill his tasks as governor. (PNA/RG)
