Dumaguete Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo has announced plans to construct “shoreline protection” from Pantawan 1 to Pantawan 2 this year.

The Mayor made the announcement after the City Council passed a supplemental budget of P238 million in addition to the City’s budget two weeks ago.

Costing P54 million, the Mayor said the reclamation project will involve expanding the boulevard seaward by eight meters, which will have wave deflectors and new pavers along the 360-meter long promenade.

He said the improved boulevard could accommodate more joggers and strollers, and  that the installation of wave deflectors would prevent seawater from eroding the pavers, and protect the business establishments along the boulevard.

He said he and the members of the City Council have come to an agreement on the reclamation project.

Another project to be funded by the supplemental fund is the purchase of heavy equipment for the City Engineer’s Office, and add a “new and bigger” pyrolysis machine at the Environment & Natural Resources Office Materials Recovery Facility, with a budget of P84 million.

The City will also construct rows of socialized houses for the Banilad Plainsview Housing, with a budget of P100 million.

About 200 houses will be built which will benefit more needy families. With the City’s approved budget of P100 million, each housing unit will cost about half a million pesos.

The Mayor pointed out the earlier proposed budget of P15 million “could only build less than 30 units”.

He said he had tasked the concerned agencies last year to prepare the detailed program of works.

He added the projects will be locally-funded, using budgetary savings and “underestimated revenues” that the City government realized in 2023.
