An estimated 2,000 job seekers flocked to a shopping mall in Dumaguete City, the capital of Negros Oriental, on Thursday for a job fair held as part of the local celebration of Labor Day.

The activity was jointly carried out by the provincial Tripartite Industrial Peace Council, chaired by Gov. Roel Degamo, the Department of Labor & Employment, and the Dumaguete City local government unit, among others.

Ma. Socorro Mira, head of the Public Employment Service Office of Dumaguete City, disclosed that at least 29 companies, both for local and overseas employment, participated in the Labor Day job fair held at the Robinsons Place shopping mall in this capital city.

Describing the activity as successful, Mira thanked the participating companies for taking part in the job fair that provided the opportunity for those seeking employment.

Applicants went through a screening process first and were assisted by various PESO workers prior to the actual interview by authorized recruitment personnel of the different companies, Mira said.

Facilitators were on hand to monitor the Hiring On the Spot of applicants, she added. About seven were hired immediately while others are to informed later for a follow-up interview or hiring.

About 24,000 different positions for various companies, to include business process outsourcing, were offered during the job fair, Mira disclosed.

Only minor problems were encountered, such as the absence of requirements like transcript of records, birth certificates, and others, but the applicants after pre-screening were still submitted for interview, she said.

Also, students hired by the city government and the DOLE under the SPES (Special Program for the Employment of Students) were utilized as volunteers during the job fair.

Meanwhile, Mira stressed that applicants are encouraged to visit the PESO on regular days as job hiring continues, depending on the availability of positions.

Mira disclosed that the Dumaguete PESO averages hiring of 10 to 12 overseas workers and eight to 10 workers for local employment. (PNA) LAP/JFP
