Veteran campaigner Bobby Torres shocked top seed National Master Ryan Trajera June 26 and pulled a magnificent win in the third round to lead the June edition of the Monthly Blitz Tournament — a lead that Torres held until the very end to capture the much-coveted first prize.

Torres has a score card of four wins, two draws, and zero loss or a total of five points/six rounds to top the 30-player field, Swiss system event.

On the other hand, Gemon Tolentino tallied the same number of points but have to settle 2nd place due to lower tie-break points.

Meanwhile, NM Trajera bounced back from his unfortunate loss and won his 4th and 5th round games, before halving the point with Edgar Conjuico in the 6th and final round, thereby tying with Conjuico in the 3rd-4th place with 4.5points each.

Tanjay City’s wheel-chaired chess wizard Jeffrey Alcantara settled for 5th-7th spots along with Almer Bañaria and Engr. Carlito Soriano with four points apiece. Top junior award went to Vincent Baleña of Tanjay City while the top senior player was Ding Salon. The top 7 players each received handsome cash prizes from the sponsors.

This series of Monthly Blitz Tournaments was regularly sponsored by Dumaguete City Vice-Mayor Alan Gel Cordova, Atty. Cyrus Riconalla, Atty. Alfredo Orquillas Jr., Atty. Jason Bandal, and Sibulan Councilor Atty. Mark Banquerigo. (PR)
