The Negros Oriental Sports Confederation is set to hold a run-for-a-cause dubbed “50K Leon Kilat Ultramarathon”, the proceeds of which will benefit ONE Rescue EMS.
The organizers, led by race director Paultom Paras, has encouraged long distance runners in the country, as well as avid local runners, to join the race that kicks off on Dec. 7 and ends on Dec. 8 in the municipality of Bacong.
Other race organizers include MetroDumaguete Roadrunners Club and the Dumaguete Adventure Runners & Striders.
The Marathon Festival, which honors local hero Lt. Gen. Pantaleon Villegas, also known as Leon Kilat who was born in Bacong, will feature three run-categories: the 50K ultra, 21K half marathon, and 10K fun run.
Paras said the marathon festival aims to support ONE Rescue Emergency Medical Service in some of its needs, which has also been supporting local races in the Province since 2011.

Records show that ONE Rescue responds to at least 10 emergency calls each day, or about 300 emergency calls a month, 90 percent of which are vehicular accidents, mainly involving motorcycles.
“That gives you an idea of the urgency of responding to emergency cases right here in our neighborhood,” said Atty. Riodil Montebon, president of ONE Rescue.
Montebon said their two new ambulances need to be equipped with medical tools like stretchers, oxygen tanks, portable monitors, and medical kits.
The race organizers are urging endurance runners, as well as short distance racers, to register online at leonkilatmarathon.com by Monday, Nov. 25.
The running route starts in Bacong, going uphill westward to Valencia-downhill to Dumaguete-south to Bacong, Dauin, and upto Km. 24 in Zamboanguita (turning point); then northward back to Dauin and finishing at the Bacong municipal park where a statue of Leon Kilat on his horse stands.
