Linis, lusog, lakas, ligtas… chanted a group of about a hundred and fifty kids from the Candau-ay Elementary School last March 17th as Lakan Bunyi, a seasoned artist-trainor from Manila, led an energetic informance on disaster prevention and promotion of wellness together with four youth thespians from the Youth Advocates through Theater Arts (YATTA).
The informance was part of a cultural program called Kalinga ng Sining initiated by the Cultural Center of the Philippines Outreach Program led by Carmencita Bernardo.
Co-organizing with local partners YATTA, Silliman University Cultural Affairs Committee, the Guidance & Testing Division, and the Association of Barangay Captains Dumaguete, CCP held a Training of Trainors for artists, guidance counselors and barangay officials on the use of the arts for healing and empowerment last March 13-15, followed a half-day program at Barangay Candau-ay on March 17 that included a memorial ceremony to honor God’s creation and those who perished during the Typhoon Sendong, an outreach workshop for about 150 kids, and a community performance.
Present in all the events last March 17th was Candau-ay’s Barangay Capt. Gregorio Oira who welcomed the program for his constituents, and thanked all the organizers for uplifting the spirit of families affected by the flashfloods from Typhoon Sendong. Oira quipped, “We hope that this can have a follow-up program.”
