Authorities will have one big security nightmare this week as fun-loving people gather in Dumaguete for the 118th Founder’s Week.
Yes, everyone’s heard of the events that happened these past few weeks but that seems farthest from everyone’s minds at the moment, as our guests are here to have a good time and enjoy reliving the memories of yesteryears.
But our homecoming folks had better take precautions against a proven killer lurking in the dark – the dengue mosquito. The Department of Health reports that dengue cases in Negros Oriental continue to rise amid the rainy season.
There have been 16 deaths from dengue throughout Negros Oriental since January this year. Of the 2,823 recorded cases of dengue, 12 percent happened in Dumaguete.

There are three Dumaguete barangays here that have the highest incidences of dengue: Candau-ay, Bagacay, and Cadawinonan.
Health authorities say this is probably due to the presence of water-collecting leaves, bottles, tires, or tin cans in the area.
Still, we cannot say we are safe if we confine ourselves to “barangay Silliman” or at the boulevard as we are dealing with flying mosquitoes.
The good news is that not all mosquitos carry the dengue virus. The bad news is that we can hardly tell which one does or does not have it.
It would therefore be wise to apply some insect repellent during the fun days here in Dumaguete. Bringing that one small bottle could give you enough peace of mind to make more beautiful memories.
