This year, Pasko sa Dumaguete, the City’s annual holiday celebration, comes wrapped in the sheen of charity and rehabilitation as the Christmas decorations — soon to light up the M.L. Quezon Park — are being prepared by inmates from the Bureau of Jail Management & Penology.
The activity, part of the parol project, will be a means for the inmates to generate some income.
Some 650 lanterns are currently being produced by the inmates, under the supervision of visual artists Jude Millares and Beshiel Mayordomo.
The Dumaguete government, led by the City Tourism office, will also partner with the BJMP, the Department of Social Welfare & Development, as well as Subida Souvenirs for a Christmas wish-granting project called Pangandoy sa Pasko, aimed at helping and providing holiday cheer for the children of the BJMP inmates.“
We have about 200 children below 12 years of age in our roster, whose Christmas wishes range from a t-shirt to a bicycle,” said City Tourism Officer Jacqueline Veloso-Antonio.
“We are the City of Gentle People, and so we want to make sure the celebration of Christmas is also be felt by those who are less privileged — and this year, we have chosen the families of Persons Deprived of Liberties as recipients for Pangandoy sa Pasko,” Antonio said.
She encouraged the residents in the community with the opportunity to grant the wishes of the children.
Those who wish to help can visit the City Social Welfare & Development Office, or call (035) 422 8117, or email [email protected] for details. (PIO)
