More than 5,000 students and other participants from various sectors over the weekend converged at the Mariano Perdices Memorial Coliseum in Dumaguete to join the formation for the largest human peace sign for the Guinness Book of World Records.
The mass movement for peace promotion centering on the formation of a human peace sign aims to help people attain an absolute want of awareness, knowledge and empathy for peace and to help the multi-sectoral groups to rise from apathy into action.
Participants in the activity dubbed “Light Up For Peace” included students from the different universities within the city, ROTC and CWTS, members of the Philippine Army’s 302nd Brigade and 79th IB, high school students and faculty members from Negros Oriental High School, students from University of St La Salle in Bacolod City, members of the different NGOs and POs in the city, local government units and other peace loving citizens.
The Renaissance Youth Leaders Forum of Silliman University in partnership with the University Spiritual Life Council, Smart Telecommunications, Oriental Negros Children’s Advocacy Network and the Philippine Army were the primary movers of the event.
The activity was divided into two main parts, namely a parade around the city and the formation of the Human Peace Sign at the coliseum.
Brig. Gen. Lysander A. Suerte, deputy commander of the AFP’s Central Command based in Camp Lapu-Lapu, Cebu City, Col. Francisco M. Patrimonio, 302nd Brigade Commander and Angelo Tiongson, representing Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo were among the honored guests in the activity. (PNA)
