Some 44 participants from 17 municipalities and cities in Negros Oriental joined the Multi-Hazard Preparedness Seminar conducted jointly by the Department of Science &Technology, the Provincial Planning & Development Office, and the League of Local Planning & Development Coordinators last Oct. 2-3, 2012 at Bethel Guest House.

The participants included mostly LGU planning and development coordinators, engineers, and disaster risk reduction and management action officers.

On the first day they were updated on the government’s disaster prevention and mitigation initiatives such as PAGASA’s Project NOAH (Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards), PHIVOLCS’ Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System, and DENR-MGB’s geohazard mapping.

On the second day the participants underwent a quick appreciation/refresher course on the computer-based REDAS conducted by the PHIVOLCS team headed by Dr. Leonila Bautista. (Gilbert Arbon)
