Local government units south of Negros Oriental have expressed support for the first-ever ultramarathon in the Province that will be held starting Friday, April 27, dubbed “The 1st Oriental Negros Ultramarathon: The Siaton Challenge.”
The event is organized by the Metro Dumaguete Roadrunners Club (MDRC) and the Dumaguete Amateur Roadrunners & Striders (DARS).
An ultramarathon is a run covering a distance of at least 50 kilometers. This ultramarathon will start at km 0 fronting the Capitol, and will end at km 50 in Siaton.
Paultom Paras, race director, said the run will start at 11:59 p.m. of Friday, April 27. “The runners have up to 12 hours to finish the distance of 50 kilometers,” he said. The race will end in the town of Siaton by 12 noon, April 28.
There will be shorter distances during this race, such as a full 42k marathon, and a 21k half marathon for other runners.
The 42k run will start in Bacong at 1 a.m. of April 28, while the half-marathon will start at 4 a.m. in Zamboanguita, Paras said.
Gov. Roel Degamo has endorsed the event to the local government units, the Philippine National Police and the Army, who will provide first aid teams, escorts, and security.
Zamboanguita Mayor Kit Marc Adanza and Siaton Mayor Albert Ator have so far expressed their commitment to support the activity.
The medical team for the ultramarathon is headed by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mark Macias. He will be working closely with the medical groups of the towns of Zamboanguita and Siaton.
